Spiral, Sand Sculpture, Piha

1996

Lopdell House Gallery. Art on the Beach.

The thirty metre sand spiral at Piha referenced the tiny, fragile, white Rams Horn squid shells (Spirula Spirula) found on west coast beaches. Unusual weather conditions allowed the work to remain for two weeks before it gradually washed away.
With the artists fee for the beach event, I bought several spades, a huge picnic and invited thirty friends to help. After dark we lit candles on the mounds and filmed the work as the tide came in.

Dimensions: Diameter 30000mm x Height 1000mm maximum.

Materials: West coast sand.
