Missionary Zeal

1995

Passage Series

Collection of the Artist, Auckland.

The work assembled from printers' blocks, references the arrival of the printed word in Aotearoa. The Bible brought by Christian missionaries as a source of spiritual guidance and a place for recording family histories.

The work combines recycled, wooden, printers blocks each side of which I've drilled through from each side and connected with string dipped in red wax.

As a book artist, I felt the integrity of each wood letter block should be preserved. The threads of the work could be disconnected and the blocks reused for printing if necessary.
