Pacific Star, 1998
Salvaged kauri, acrylic paint, bronze, recycled cedar piano keys and recycled black glass spheres,  14 panels each 2200 x 280 x 25mm.
Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre, Noumea, New Caledonia. Commissioned performance work, Noumea, New Caledonia

Commissioned for the opening celebrations of the Jean-Marie Tjiboau Cultural Centre, Noumea, New Caledonia in 1998, the performance work was placed on the sand during low tide. The work floated on the incoming tide with the glass floats clinking together, to arrive on the crowded beach during the opening celebrations of the Cultural Centre.
The circular, black-glass centre was recycled from an earlier work, Mountain Reign and addressed the fragility of the relationship between the French and Kanaks.  The piano keys played on the name of the architect of the building, Renzo Piano, and the fourteen floating, carved and stained panels allude to the importance of a balanced truce and a new beginning in Noumea.  The name Pacific Star was taken from a medal awarded to soldiers, for service in the Pacific, after the Second World War.
