Oioi Bridge, 2002

Site Specific Commission, Connells Bay Centre for Sculpture, Waiheke Island.
Aluminium structure and suspended Silver coins: 7metres in length tapering from 1200mm to 600mm.

The subtle, fractured appearance of wetland grass, oioi, inspired this bridge. The decking of perforated aluminium planks add to the lightness of feeling when visitors walkacross and rattle the bridg. The Bridge tapers, creating a false perspective over its entire length. The striped rods have been sandblasted, rolled to a uniform radius and increase in height at both ends, accentuating the arc of the span. Silver coins embossed with Tui and Tuatara were connected with fine stainless steel cable to anchor the curved rods. The coins allude to 'Bridging finance' and refer to the debate in 2002 about the usefulness of the five cent coin.
